India is Planning to Replace Maitri Research Station with Maitri-2 in Antarctica by 2029

India is set to bolster its scientific presence in Antarctica with the establishment of Maitri-2, a state-of-the-art research station, by 2029. The new facility will replace the existing Maitri station, which has been operational since 1989 and has played a pivotal role in studies related to climate change, geology, and biodiversity in the icy continent.

The decision to construct Maitri-2 comes as part of India's commitment to the Antarctic Treaty System, emphasizing sustainable research and global cooperation. The upcoming station will feature advanced infrastructure, eco-friendly technologies, and cutting-edge laboratories, enabling scientists to conduct research with greater precision and minimal environmental impact.

Maitri-2 is expected to enhance India’s contribution to global polar science, addressing critical challenges like the melting of polar ice, rising sea levels, and their implications for the planet. With its launch, India reaffirms its dedication to exploring the frontiers of scientific discovery while promoting the preservation of Antarctica's fragile ecosystem.
