Strategic Cooperation Agreement between the UAE and India in the Field of Polar Research

 


In a significant move to strengthen their strategic partnership, the UAE and India have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing scientific cooperation in the field of polar research. This agreement underscores the two nations' shared commitment to advancing global knowledge and addressing pressing environmental challenges.

The MoU was formalized during the 15th session of the UAE-India Joint Committee, with the UAE Polar Program and the Indian National Centre for Arctic and Ocean Research (NCPOR) coming together to facilitate academic exchange, joint research initiatives, and capacity-building in polar sciences. The signing ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including His Excellency Abdulla Ahmed Balaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, and His Excellency Dr. Ravichandran, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, India.

This collaboration will enhance the scientific capabilities of both countries, especially the UAE, which is striving to become a global leader in polar science. By tapping into India's vast experience in polar research, the UAE aims to strengthen its presence in the polar regions, contributing to critical global climate action and advancing the understanding of polar ecosystems.

His Excellency Abdulla Balaa emphasized the significance of the partnership, highlighting the UAE’s commitment to scientific excellence and the potential for groundbreaking discoveries in the polar fields, which will benefit future generations.

The UAE Polar Programme, a key focus of this collaboration, aims to actively participate in international expeditions to both the Antarctic and Arctic, supporting climate action efforts and deepening understanding of the polar environment. This agreement builds on the long-standing ties between the UAE and India, which have cooperated in sectors such as energy, trade, defense, and emerging technologies.

With this new MoU, the two nations are reaffirming their strong strategic partnership and positioning themselves as leaders in the global scientific community, particularly in the vital and challenging field of polar research.
