Indian Railways to Manufacture Bullet Trains Locally Amid Price Disputes with Japanese Suppliers

 

In a significant stride towards enhancing India's rail infrastructure, the Indian Railways has commissioned the Integral Coach Factory (ICF)Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai to manufacture two standard-gauge bullet trains domestically this year. This initiative marks a pivotal moment as India ventures into the production of high-speed trains capable of reaching a maximum speed of 250 kmph, a first for the nation.

The decision to localize the manufacturing process follows stalled negotiations with Japanese suppliers, primarily due to disagreements over pricing. The collaboration with Japan had initially promised advanced technology and expertise; however, the escalating costs prompted Indian authorities to explore indigenous solutions. By tasking ICF, which has a proven track record in train manufacturing, the Indian Railways aims to cut costs while developing in-house capabilities in high-speed train technology.

The locally manufactured bullet trains are expected to significantly enhance the country's rail network, providing faster and more efficient transportation options.
