  Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (August 29, 2025) emphasized that the India-Japan partnership is vital for ensuring global peace and stability. Addressing the India-Japan Joint Economic Forum in Tokyo, he said, “From Metro to manufacturing, from semiconductors to start-ups, India-Japan partnership in every sector became a symbol of mutual trust.” PM Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Japan, held summit talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, and emerging technologies. The leaders will release a joint statement along with the “2035 Vision Statement” , upgrading the 2025 roadmap adopted by Mr. Modi and former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Former Japanese Prime Ministers Yoshihide Suga and Fumio Kishida also called on Mr. Modi during the visit. The meeting marks 20 years since the first India-Japan annual summit in 2005 between Junichiro Koizumi and Manmohan Singh.

The two leaders reviewed bilateral ties and reaffirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation across sectors including health, climate, digital economy, aquaculture, and maritime security. In a major development, both nations agreed on the Terms of Reference for a future Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Several key Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were also signed—ranging from fisheries and digital transformation to meteorological cooperation and recognition of Indian Pharmacopoeia. India extended a Line of Credit worth ₹4,850 crore and also eased annual debt repayment obligations for the Maldives.
