Assam Floods: Nearly 1.20 Lakh People Affected in 20 Districts; Heavy Rains to Continue
Guwahati, June 22, 2023: Assam, the northeastern state of India, is grappling with severe flooding as heavy monsoon rains continue to lash the region. According to the latest reports, nearly 1.20 lakh people have been affected across 20 districts of the state, with thousands being displaced from their homes.
The Brahmaputra River and its tributaries, which flow through Assam, have swelled beyond their banks, causing widespread inundation in low-lying areas. The torrential rains have triggered landslides and caused extensive damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and houses.
The affected districts include Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Udalguri, Darrang, Nalbari, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Majuli, Sivasagar, and Dibrugarh. The state government, along with disaster management agencies, is working round the clock to provide relief and support to the affected population.
Rescue and relief operations are underway, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams being deployed in the affected areas. Temporary shelters have been set up to provide accommodation to those displaced by the floods, and efforts are being made to provide them with food, clean water, and medical assistance.
The state government has also issued advisories to the people living in flood-prone areas, urging them to move to safer locations and take necessary precautions. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond promptly to any emergencies that may arise.
However, the weather forecast brings little respite as heavy rains are expected to continue in the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of further downpours, which could exacerbate the flood situation in Assam. The state government has urged people to remain vigilant and cooperate with the authorities to ensure their safety.
Floods have become an annual occurrence in Assam during the monsoon season, causing immense hardship to the people and disrupting normal life. The state government has been taking steps to mitigate the impact of floods, including the construction of embankments, dredging of rivers, and implementing early warning systems. However, the scale and intensity of the floods pose significant challenges, requiring continued efforts to enhance preparedness and resilience.
The Central Government has assured its support to the state in dealing with the flood situation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his concern and directed the relevant authorities to provide all possible assistance to Assam. The government has also allocated funds for relief and rehabilitation efforts.
The people of Assam, known for their resilience, are coming together to support each other in this time of crisis. Non-governmental organizations, community groups, and volunteers are actively involved in relief operations, providing aid to those affected by the floods.
The focus now remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of the affected population. Efforts are being made to restore normalcy in the flood-affected areas, including the repair of damaged infrastructure and the provision of essential services.
As the state continues to battle the floods, it is essential for all stakeholders, including the government, local communities, and individuals, to work collaboratively to minimize the impact of the disaster and build a more resilient Assam that can withstand the challenges posed by annual floods.
