UAE Launches AED20 Billion Zayed Humanitarian Legacy Initiative to Drive Global Development

The International Humanitarian and Philanthropy Council recently convened to unveil the ambitious Zayed Humanitarian Legacy Initiative, a monumental effort aimed at fostering global development and addressing pressing societal challenges. With a staggering allocation of AED20 billion (approximately US$5.45 billion) over a decade, this initiative stands as a testament to the UAE's unwavering commitment to humanitarian endeavors and its dedication to advancing sustainable solutions worldwide.

Chaired by H.H. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes' Affairs, the Council outlined the strategic framework and immediate funding priorities of the initiative. This initiative, announced on Zayed Humanitarian Day in honor of the UAE's Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, marks a significant milestone in the nation's journey towards accelerating progress on the global development agenda.

The Zayed Humanitarian Legacy Initiative is poised to make a substantial impact across various sectors, including education, health, environment, food security, and humanitarian aid response. By prioritizing support for low- and middle-income communities worldwide, the initiative underscores the UAE's commitment to leaving a positive and lasting imprint on the lives of vulnerable populations.

H.H. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "This initiative highlights the UAE’s long-standing commitment to social and economic progress and to pioneering development solutions that save and improve the lives of the world’s most vulnerable." Indeed, the initiative embodies the UAE's ethos of compassion, generosity, and solidarity with those in need.

The UAE's track record as a leading global donor is exemplary, consistently ranking among the most generous contributors to official development assistance (ODA). According to the OECD Development Assistance Committee (OECD/DAC), the UAE held the distinction of being the world's largest donor of ODA per gross national income (GNI) in multiple years. This legacy of generosity underscores the nation's steadfast dedication to supporting humanitarian causes and driving positive change on a global scale.

As the Zayed Humanitarian Legacy Initiative unfolds, it will serve as a beacon of hope for communities grappling with adversity, offering tangible assistance and sustainable solutions to alleviate suffering and foster prosperity. By harnessing the collective efforts of governments, philanthropic organizations, and stakeholders worldwide, the initiative embodies the spirit of solidarity and cooperation essential for addressing the world's most pressing challenges.

In embarking on this transformative journey, the UAE reaffirms its commitment to upholding Sheikh Zayed's enduring legacy of compassion, tolerance, and benevolence. Through sustained collaboration and concerted action, the Zayed Humanitarian Legacy Initiative will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on the global landscape, ushering in a brighter and more inclusive future for generations to come.
