India Surpasses US and Europe with Record 1,681 Locomotives in FY 2024–25
India has achieved a significant milestone in railway manufacturing by producing 1,681 locomotives in the fiscal year 2024-25, surpassing the output of both the United States and Europe. This record-breaking production reflects the country's growing self-reliance in heavy engineering and its commitment to modernizing rail infrastructure.
Driven by the efforts of key manufacturing hubs like Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW), Varanasi’s Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), and the Electric Locomotive Factory (ELF) in Madhepura, India has expanded its capacity to meet both domestic and global demand. The locomotives produced are primarily electric, aligning with India’s push for sustainable transport and reduced carbon emissions.
This achievement not only strengthens India's position as a global railway manufacturing hub but also supports export potential and job creation within the country.
