Govt to Launch 'Sahkar' - Driver-Owned App-Based Taxi Service
In a move to empower drivers and challenge the dominance of private ride-hailing giants like Ola and Uber, the Indian government is set to introduce a new app-based taxi service named ‘Sahkar’. Unlike traditional platforms, Sahkar will operate on a cooperative model, where taxi drivers will not just be service providers but also stakeholders.
Drivers will be enrolled as members and co-owners, ensuring that profits from the platform are shared directly with them and deposited into their bank accounts. The initiative aims to ensure fair earnings, reduce commission burdens, and promote driver welfare through collective ownership.
