Asiatic Lion Numbers See 32% Surge in India

India’s Asiatic lion population has witnessed a remarkable rise, growing from 674 in 2020 to 891 in 2025 — a 32.2% increase. Conservation measures, including habitat protection, anti-poaching efforts, and community engagement in Gujarat’s Gir region, have played a pivotal role in this success. The growth not only marks a triumph for wildlife conservation but also reinforces India’s commitment to preserving one of the world’s rarest big cats.
