Green hydrogen cost in India to fall to $2 per kg by 2032: Mission director

 


India’s ambitious green hydrogen push is expected to drive costs down to nearly $2 per kilogram by 2032, according to the country’s Green Hydrogen Mission director.

The government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched with an outlay of ₹19,744 crore, aims to make India a global hub for production, usage, and export of green hydrogen. Falling renewable power prices, advances in electrolyser technology, and large-scale deployment are seen as the main drivers behind the sharp cost reduction.

Currently, green hydrogen costs in India range between $4–6 per kg, making it less competitive than fossil fuel-based alternatives. Achieving the $2 mark will enable widespread adoption in sectors like steel, fertilizers, refining, and shipping, while also opening opportunities for exports.

India has set a target to produce 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030, a move expected to significantly cut carbon emissions and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.
