Construction of India’s Largest Urban Road Tunnel Begins in Mumbai

Work has officially begun on India’s largest urban road tunnel, a 9.24 km stretch connecting Orange Gate to Marine Drive in Mumbai. Designed to ease chronic congestion and enhance coastal connectivity, the ambitious project marks a major step forward in transforming the city’s transport infrastructure.

The tunnel will provide faster east-west travel, reduce traffic load on key arterial roads, and offer a smoother commute for thousands of daily travellers. Equipped with modern safety and ventilation systems, the project reflects Mumbai’s push toward advanced, future-ready mobility solutions.

Scheduled for completion by 2028, the Orange Gate–Marine Drive tunnel is expected to significantly reshape movement across South Mumbai and boost overall urban efficiency.
