India Eyes Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh for First Indigenous SMRs

 

India has proposed Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh as the locations for setting up its first indigenous Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), marking a significant step in the country’s clean energy transition. SMRs are compact nuclear reactors designed for faster deployment, enhanced safety, and lower upfront costs compared to traditional nuclear plants. 

By identifying these two states, the government aims to leverage existing nuclear infrastructure, coastal access, and strong industrial ecosystems. The move aligns with India’s long-term goals of energy security, low-carbon power generation, and technological self-reliance in advanced nuclear solutions.
