India Sets Up First Deep-Sea Marine Microbial Research Hub in Nellore

India is taking a major leap in ocean science with its first deep-sea marine microbial research facility coming up in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. Designed to advance the study of deep-ocean microorganisms, the centre will support cutting-edge research in climate science, biotechnology, marine ecology, and resource exploration.

Equipped with advanced sampling, genome analysis, and high-pressure simulation labs, the facility aims to unlock insights into deep-sea microbes that influence global carbon cycles and hold potential for new medicines, enzymes, and sustainable technologies. This initiative strengthens India’s blue-economy vision and positions the country as a leader in deep-ocean scientific research.
