India Accelerates Indigenous GPU Development

India is stepping up plans to build its own graphics processing units (GPUs) as part of a broader push for technological self-reliance. The move gained momentum following discussions between Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and senior executives from Nvidia, highlighting India’s intent to strengthen its domestic semiconductor and high-performance computing capabilities.

Developing indigenous GPUs is seen as critical for supporting artificial intelligence, data centers, defense applications, and advanced research. The initiative aligns with India’s semiconductor mission, which aims to reduce dependence on foreign hardware, build a robust chip design ecosystem, and position the country as a global technology manufacturing hub.
