No More RTO Visits: Telangana Enables Permanent Vehicle Registration at Dealerships

Telangana Transport Department launches digital permanent vehicle registration at automobile dealerships

In a major move aimed at improving ease of vehicle ownership, the Telangana Transport Department has introduced a system that allows permanent registration of newly purchased vehicles directly at automobile dealerships. The initiative eliminates the long-standing requirement for buyers to personally visit Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) for registration formalities.

The new process comes into effect from January 24 and is applicable statewide, marking a significant shift toward digital governance and citizen convenience in Telangana.

How the New Registration System Works

Telangana introduces permanent vehicle registration directly at automobile dealerships from January 24, eliminating RTO visits for buyers of new two-wheelers and cars.

Under the revised system, authorised automobile dealers will handle the complete permanent registration process on behalf of customers. Buyers can now drive their new vehicles home fully registered without stepping into an RTO.

Dealers will submit online applications through the Transport Department’s digital platform. All mandatory documents — including purchase invoices, statutory forms, insurance details, address proof and vehicle photographs — will be uploaded electronically.

Once the documents are verified, transport officials will digitally allot the registration number. The Registration Certificate (RC) will then be sent to the vehicle owner via speed post, ensuring a hassle-free experience.

Pilot Test Confirms System Readiness

The rollout follows a successful pilot test conducted at a city-based automobile showroom, where a four-wheeler was registered and delivered to the customer entirely through the new digital platform. The trial confirmed the system’s technical readiness and operational feasibility, paving the way for statewide implementation.

Officials clarified that the facility applies only to vehicles purchased from January 24 onwards, and earlier purchases will continue to follow the existing registration process.

Applicable Only to Non-Transport Vehicles

The Transport Department has made it clear that the new registration facility is currently limited to non-transport vehicles, including two-wheelers and private cars. Commercial and transport vehicles are excluded from this phase of implementation.

Authorities indicated that the focus for now is on streamlining high-volume personal vehicle registrations, which account for a significant share of daily RTO footfall.

Benefits for Vehicle Buyers and RTOs

The initiative is expected to bring multiple benefits:

  • Time savings for vehicle buyers

  • Reduced crowding at RTO offices

  • Faster vehicle delivery

  • Greater transparency in the registration process

  • Improved efficiency for transport officials

By shifting routine registration work to authorised dealerships, RTOs can focus more on enforcement, compliance, and road safety initiatives.

Statewide Coordination and Implementation

Ahead of the launch, the Transport Commissioner conducted an online review meeting with transport officials from all 33 districts of Telangana. The session focused on implementation guidelines, system readiness, and addressing operational challenges to ensure uniform adoption across the state.

Officials said continuous monitoring will be carried out during the initial phase to resolve any technical or procedural issues faced by dealers or applicants.
